A Message from Neighbourhood Matters

I am writing to ask for your support in encouraging residents of Gwent to sign up to Gwent Police Neighbourhood Matters, our free community messaging service. It helps residents receive local policing updates, crime prevention advice, appeals and engagement information.

Residents can sign up online, receive updates by email and use the smartphone app for location-based alerts. They can also share feedback, respond to surveys and indicate whether they have CCTV this may be able to assist with local enquiries. Translation tools are available through the platform to support wider access, and the service can be shared in different formats to help reach more communities.

By signing up, residents can choose the updates most relevant to them and help neighbourhood teams and partners better understand local concerns and priorities.

We would be grateful if you could help promote the sign-up link through your portals, newsletters, communication channels and digital services, helping us reach residents who may not already be connected to this service, including those who may benefit from translated or more accessible information:

https://www.gwentneighbourhoodmatters.co.uk/

Artwork and suggested social media wording will be included with this email for use across your websites and other digital and printed communications. Where helpful, partners may also wish to share printed copies or QR codes to help residents access the service more easily.

Thank you in advance for your support in helping us raise awareness of this service and encourage more residents across Gwent to stay connected with their local neighbourhood teams.  If you have any questions or would like a demonstration of the system, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Further crime prevention information can also be found on the Gwent Police crime prevention pages Crime prevention advice | Gwent Police and through guidance from Secured by Design Secured by Design - Crime Prevention & Security Advice.

Kind regards,

Leeanne Husselbee, PC Richard Kelly & PC David Abrams

Circular Walk Way Mark found in Ireland

A way mark post from the Michaelston-y-Fedw Circular Walk has been found on the beach at Doolin, Ireland after a 5 year, 400 mile journey.

Oscar Bradley, his partner Sophie and Oscar's father were visiting a festival in Doolin for the day when they decided to go to the pier in Doolin for a walk. Oscar's father spotted a wooden post on the stoney beach by the pier and decided to investigate. Oscar and Sophie watched as he carried the post precariously over the pebbles, determined to bring it to steady ground.

After discussing whether the hinges were bronze or galvanised with a man he met from Belfast they concluded they were indeed galvanised and they decided to take it home with them to Cork.

The following morning they decided to investigate the post's origin and noticed there was a partial circular plate attached to the post on which they could make out 'MICHA' and 'CIRCULAR WALK'. Oscar contacted Ramblers Cymru, Cefn Mably Arms landlady Caroline Hill and the Newport Outdoor Group on Facebook to find out more about the post.

Andrew from the Cardiff Ramblers shared the year and exact location from where it went missing: "I attach two photos of a walk leaflet produced by Newport Council which details the walk. The 'D' on the post identifies it as the way mark post at position D on the map.

"Some years back, around 2020, South Wales suffered from a severe storm and the river Rhymney burst its banks. The kissing gate at D was completely smashed and some of it swept away. I know this as after the storm, I was walking the part of this route and witnessed the destruction."

Oscar says "We've had a good laugh at imagining the encounters the post has had over its 5 year journey. We hope one day it may even take an assisted bob back to its rightful home of Michaelston-y-Fedw."
